Conor Shaughnessy, a 3rd year student in St. Paul’s Secondary School, Oughterard, Co. Galway was recently selected to play on the Irish U-15 Soccer team.
Conor was selected having come through a series of trial matches which involved players from throughout Ireland and the UK. He was one of only two players to make the final cut. In December Conor represented Ireland in Qatar.
In his first game he scored the winning goal. He played central mid-field and his goal was described on the FAI website as follows;
‘Shaughnessy produced the moment of the match by acrobatically turning mid-air to volley home the winner.”
Conor’s brother, Joe, a past pupil of St. Paul’s, also enjoyed considerable success with his club and county before becoming a professional footballer in Aberdeen. He won Irish Caps also last Summer at U-19 level against Macedonia and Ukraine.
Conor played with the local Soccer club before moving to Mervue Utd and later to Salthill Devon FC .
