On Saturday night we were privileged to have 200 students and their teachers from around Ireland staying in St Joseph’s College as part of the preparations for the Papal mass in the Phoenix Park on Sunday.
Ceist had asked us to be a Host School for students who were acting as volunteers for the World Meeting of families on Saturday 25th to Sunday 26th August.
The volunteers, along with 25 of our own 5th and 6th year students had a very busy and memorable weekend!
After a lovely prayer service in St Mary’s church, Lucan on Saturday, they made their way to Phoenix Park where they underwent 2 hours of training, facilitated by Ceist.
On Sunday morning, they had an early rise, meeting at the West County Hotel at 6am and walking to the Phoenix Park to begin their duties.
The volunteers acted as stewards as the crowds arrived, guiding people along allocated routes to their viewing areas.
Later in the mass, the volunteers acted as Eucharistic umbrella bearers for the many Eucharistic ministers and priests at the event.
It was a great day for all, a privilege for our school to be involved and a very memorable event for our student participants.
