St. Joseph’s Beat D-Kube
Last week, St. Joseph’s Secondary School held “D-Kube” in St. Maurs GAA as one of the major fundraising events for their Immersion Programme in June 2019. This project, education focused, will see students spend time in St. Joseph’s partner school, Archbishop Kiwanuka Secondary School in conjunction with Aidlink, an Irish charity that seeks to deliver changing improvements in some of Africa’s most impoverished areas. Next June, 28 students and 4 teachers from the school will travel to Uganda with Aidlink on this life changing experience.
On Friday the 19th of October teachers, students past and present, parents and other members of the local community made up the forty plus contestants all trying to beat each other and ultimately D-Kube itself! This fantastic fundraiser was supported by many community based, local and national businesses and organisations. From the very beginning of this project we have been greatly supported by our main sponsors, EBS Liffey Street, Glanmore Foods, Haven Pharmacy Hickeys Rush & Dalmac Langauge School. A special thank you to the huge act of charity shown by Alan Fynes of Skinny Batch, Rush and Lusk, who in taking on the final challenge of D-Kube with sheer determination beat and won D-Kube over his competitors in a tense first attempt! An honourable winner of the €1000 prize money, Alan passionately donated this back to the charity with his victory speech. In total the event raised just over a whopping €24,000 for the project. A huge thank to all involved on the night and contributing generously to such an exciting project.

College Awareness Week
In conjunction with the hugely successful College For Every Student (CFES) programme in St. Joseph’s Secondary School Rush, College Awareness Week ran from Monday November 19th to Friday November 23rd. 2nd Year students were treated to a speed careers day, where they had the opportunity to speak with personal from over 25 different professions such as a journalist, make-up artist, animal nutritionist, FAI coach and an auctioneer. Throughout the week, speakers came in to talk about the wide range of options available to students beyond secondary school, including many 3rd level institutions and colleges: Trinity College, DCU, DIT, DKIT, DIFE, NCAD, NCI, Plunkett’s College and Colaiste Dhulaigh. Other options for intrigued students were also explored and highlighted thanks to talks from: the Gardaí; Dell on jobs in IT; apprenticeships with ESB; and Accounting Tech Ireland. Well done to all the students and teachers involved in the running of another hugely successful College Awareness Week in St. Joseph’s.

Wellbeing Week 2018
Recently in St. Joseph’s Secondary School Rush was Wellbeing Week. This is a vital week in the school schedule which allows students and teachers alike to reflect and partake in activities to highlight the importance of each person’s own physical and mental wellbeing. This week provided an opportunity to participate in activities including: lessons on anti-bullying; mindfulness exercises; yoga classes; recreational and sports club speed day; talks from guest speakers on racism, healthy relationships and cyber security; and more. Students were also provided with healthy eating fresh fruit samples as alternative choices for snacks at break time and lunch. The week was topped off for the students with their school tours where they went to places such as Croke Park, Causey Farm and Carlingford Adventure Centre.
