Sacred Heart Secondary School, Clonakilty, Co. Cork, 6th Year students, Aoife Dullea, Laura Clancy, Meabhdh Sexton and lionadh Condon were crowned winners of the inaugural Certified Irish Angus competition in Croke Park on Wednesday last.
The competition, which has been running for over 2 years, saw the student’s rear 5 Irish Angus calves through the theme of sustainability.
Under the guidance of Ms. Brid Hennessy the students worked tirelessly producing a final project that was to capture the imagination of the judges.
The calves were raised on the Condon farm, following their official name giving ceremony at Sacred Heart Secondary School, in 2014.
On the farm they thrived under the diligent care of the students.
The calves were regularly weighted to monitor weight gain while the students were to demonstrate that the Angus breed could be sustainable reared to the time of slaughter without a compromise on quality and profit margin.
